Have you ever wondered what happens next to a flower that is basking in the sun and getting a little R & R and then… At harvest time the stems are cut and then quick chilled, ( sort of like us waking up in the AM and finding the temperature has plummeted, and our car tires are square), then they are packed and ready for their journey. A flower’s journey to you can span continents and oceans, covering literally tens of thousands of miles – all in a matter of days. This pre-cooling process helps preserve the flowers during their journey. FYI – at this temperature, roses are almost dormant. The warm vacation being over the flowers are now on their way to Miami, on a late night flight, as it’s cooler at night and they can sleep (stay dormant during the trip).
The flowers are taken directly from the planes to the airport’s huge cooler rooms. (talk about valet service , I usually have to wait forever at customs) These receiving terminals are kept at a constant 34 °F (1 °C). Inside the cooler, the flowers pass through highly advanced x-ray machines before they actually clear customs. (sure beats a body search!) Anything out of the ordinary that is detected by the machine is isolated in a locked cage and opened for inspection by United States Customs.
Once cleared the flowers are then sent on their way to the florist via refrigerated trucks. When they reach the florist they receive Post Harvest Care (a trim and a drink with specialized formula) and back to the cooler, until you take them home.
They love being in your home, because this is the time to warm-up, receive flower food and open to their beautiful potential.
