Pussy Willows Go Global

I often think of “Pussy Willows” as the first sign of spring. This year the little kitten, lost their mittens and are late-blooming!

Before the male catkins of these species come into full flower they are covered in fine, greyish fur, leading to a fancied likeness to tiny cats, also known as “pussies”. The catkins appear long before the leaves, and are one of the earliest signs of spring.

Europe and America

The flowering shoots of pussy willow are used both in Europe and America for spring religious decoration on Palm Sunday, as a replacement for palm branches, which do not grow that far north.

China

The many buds of the pussy willow make it a favorite flower for Chinese New Year . The fluffy white blossoms of the pussy willow resemble silk, and they soon give forth young shoots the color of green jade. Such signs of growth represent the coming of prosperity.

Once unbundled within one’s residence, the stalks are frequently decorated with gold and red ornaments – ornaments with colours and text that signify prosperity and happiness. Felt pieces of red, pink and yellow are also a common decoration in South East Asia.

Floral Arrangements

  • spider mums, roses, snapdragons, orchids, curly willow, and moss are often used with pussy willows to add color and texture
  • pussy willow branches bring unique  line interest into a spring or oriental arrangements
  • spring or Christmas wreaths made of pussy willows are also popular
  • the pussy willow adds texture and height to arrangements
  • they can be dynamic alone in a tall vase or as a simple accent in a small design

Preserving Pussy Willows for Making Dried Flower Arrangements

Perhaps you are seeking pussy willows for making dried flower arrangements. Either by arranging them with other dried flowers or letting them stand on their own, dried pussy willows can spruce up your indoor decor for years to come.

  • preserving pussy willows for dried flower arrangements entails depriving them of water at the right time
  • cut your pussy willows when they have reached the stage that you find most attractive (whether tight or more open).
  •  put them in a vase – but without water. Just an empty vase.
