Bizarre Beliefs

There are many superstitions, bizarre stories, weird beliefs, old wives tales and just plain crazy stuff about flowers out there! Some are funny, some are serious and some are, well just plain crazy!

Here’s a list of some the unusual things that people have believed (or even still believe) over the years.

  • The day of the week that you find the first flower of Spring can be used as an omen. Keep your eyes peeled for the first flower from your garden this year!
    • Monday – good fortune
    • Tuesday – greatest attempts will be successful
    • Wednesday – marriage
    • Thursday – warning of small profits
    • Friday – wealth
    • Saturday – misfortune
    • Sunday – excellent luck for weeks
  • It’s considered bad luck to give someone an even number of flowers, because even numbers of flowers are reserved for the dead.
  • While we’re on the subject, don’t steal flowers from a grave, or you might find yourself in one sooner than you think!
  • Carry an acorn wherever you go to bring luck and ensure a long life, place it at the window and it will keep lightning out.
  • As most of us know, it’s considered good luck to find a 4 leaf clover, HOWEVER a 5 leaf clover signifies bad luck!
  • Clover was also used to protect people and livestock from evil spells.
  • If you plant Rosemary by your doorstep it will keep witches away from your home.
  • If  you catch a falling leaf on the very first day of Autumn you will not catch a cold all winter long.
  • If a young girl picks a bunch daisies with her eyes closed, the number of flowers she picked will tell how many years until she gets married.
  • Anemones were used as charms to ward off bad luck and disease.
  • Be warned: If you pick Foxgloves you will anger the Fairies.
  • Taking “out of season” flowers into your home means there will most likely be a death in the family soon.
  • Smelling the scent of flowers when there are none near by is also said to predict a death.
  • Cut an apple in half and count the seeds you see, this will tell you how many children you will have!
  • To protect your home from witches and evil, grow Ivy on it.
  • Want to get pregnant? Eat Lettuce! Are you pregnant? Had enough and want to give birth? Eat Lettuce!
  • Wearing a Day Lily or a Poppy will allow you to forget your troubles.
  • To get rid of a fever or a poisoning simply cut an onion in half and place it under the bed of the sick person.
  • And speaking of onions, a wish will indeed come true as long as you make the wish whilst burning onions!
  • Red and White flower bouquets were thought to be unlucky by British nurses and were not allowed in hospitals.
  • If a patient in the hospital goes home without their flowers it is considered an omen that they will return to the hospital soon.

Have you heard most of these before? Which ones did you or do you believe?
