Were you at Spruce Meadows this Year?

If you were, did you notice the flowers? I don’t know how you could have missed them!

Flowers at Spruce MeadowsDutch florist Heleen Valstar brought with her over 40,000 stems of flowers and greens that she needed to create the hundreds of Flower Arrangements for this world class equestrian event.

The flowers were flown into Canada on the same charter plane that brought the world class European horses. All of the flowers were packed into pre-cooled boxes with a block of ice to keep them cool on the flight. Once they landed in Canada they were immediately placed onto a refrigerated truck.

Heleen Valstar said that the weather was so warm this year, they worked in the coolers and kept the finished bouquets there until they were needed. A necessary step to keep them fresh & beautiful!

The infamous florist arrived a week before the event to create the many pieces that were needed. Some of the flower varieties she brought were gladiolas, chrysanthemums, ostomerias, hortensias, sunflowers and lilies.

“We want to improve every year,” Heleen  said. “Twenty-five years ago (the amount of flowers brought) was very small so it’s growing every year a little bit and we try to improve with colours and styles.”

I for one, think she did an amazing job!
