The 100th RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Happy 100th, Chelsea Flower Show! The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is an annual, prestigious garden show held for 5 days in May on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in Chelsea, London, UK. It is one of the most famous flower shows in the world and attracts thousands of international visitors each year.

Members of the British Royal Family will often attend a preview of the show.  This year, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Camilla, Princess Beatrice and Prince Harry all made an appearance at the Chelsea Flower Show.  A special Forget-Me-Not garden was created for Prince Harry to promote Sentebal, his charity that helps vulnerable children in Lesotho, one of the poorest countries in the world. The garden, designed by landscape architect, Jinny Blom, also pays tribute to Harry’s beloved mother, the late Princess Diana.

The Chelsea Flower Show is an unique place where talented florists and designers from around all over the world can exhibit exciting and innovative garden designs. For example, in 2009, a garden made entirely of plasticine was exhibited; in 2011, the world’s first garden to be suspended in the air was displayed at the flower show. It has become the place to watch for for the latest gardening trends and to admire old garden favourite.  New flowers and plants are often launched at the show. Rewards are given out for the best garden exhibits.

This year, the flower show, which took place from May 21-25, 2013, celebrated its 100th year. There were 550 plant exhibitors, 15 show gardens, 19 smaller gardens and 150 exhibits on display. To celebrate the centenary, the site was decorated with iconic images from the last 100 years, which included photos of royal visits. Garden gnomes, which are normally banned from the Flower Show, were given temporary approval to make an appearance! Celebrity decorated gnomes were created to raise funds for charity. Also, the RHS crowned the Geranium Rozanne, a violet-blue variety with red streaks, as the plant of the century.
