Having a beach or Hawaiian Luau themed party? You must make a lei! Nothing says “beach” quite like the lei. Leis are necklaces that can be make with just about any material that can be strung together, from candy to feathers. But of course, the most popular leis are made of flowers. Fresh flowers are the best, as they are the most fragrant and attractive, but artificial ones can also be used in a pinch.
Just about any fresh flower can be used to make a lei, but avoid fragile flowers for the best results. Common flowers used in lei making include: orchids, plumerias, tuberoses, and carnations. Look in your garden to see what kind of flowers you could use or visit your local florist for your supply of fresh flowers. And don’t forget to remove the stems.
The making of the lei is actually quite easy and you just need a few materials (and some time and patience!) to get started: some flowers (preferably fresh), a long needle or wire, and string or dental floss.
